PM Tariceanu favours fall in consumption

November 9, 2008

PM Calin Popescu-Tariceanu reiterated, on Friday, at the end of an informal meeting of the heads of state and government of the EU member states, that in this period of financial crisis, which has hit more and more countries, public expenditures have to fall, money should go mainly to investment with public funds.

‘I want to stress that, in such a period, the conduct has to be of diminution in public expenditure, of orientation of expenses to investment with public funds, for the loss of jobs in the private sector to be made up by the keeping of jobs in the public sector. Consumption has not to rise, in no case, saving has to be encouraged, and so has to be support to the sector of investment, in general, to infrastructure, with compensation in the creation of jobs,’ said Tariceanu, at a press conference held in Brussels.

He stressed that measures have to be taken for the effects of the economic crisis not to go up.

‘We have to take measures for the effects of the economic crisis not have their say, we need pro-active measures, as we have already started to do in Romania, ‘ said Tariceanu.

The premier stressed that, at European level, there will be a common set of applicable measures, but he specified that it is for each EU member country to find the best of them. AGERPRES
