President Basescu: Educational system, a priority for Romania

October 28, 2008

President Traian Basescu reiterated late on Tuesday that the educational system is a priority for Romania and he argued in favour of a radical reform of the sector.

‘While in the last years, also as a result of the political support I have rendered, the education budget has grown from 3.8 to 5 and then 6 percent of GDP, a fact that has allowed a rise in the investments in infrastructure upgrading, nothing has been done for the teaching staff. The pay system has discouraged the young graduates to go to work in the educational system. There is no solution for Romania to develop a high-performance educational system without reform and within such a reform formulas should be found for the high-quality teachers to have access to the educational sector’, Basescu said.

He once again argued in favour of the increase of the teaching staff’s salaries and underscored he without hesitation promulgated the law on 50 percent rise in the teaching staff’s pay, as it was validated by Parliament and the Constitutional Court. AGERPRES
