Traian Basescu: BOR, landmark cultivating respect for values
September 30, 2008
The Romanian Orthodox Church (BOR) is a landmark cultivating respect for values and thus has the respect of the entire society, said President Traian Basescu on Tuesday during the ceremony that marked the first anniversary of Patriarch Daniel’s enthronement.
In the message he conveyed on this occasion the Head of State said that the day of September 30 was an important one for the whole Romanian Orthodox Church.
‘I wish to voice my full appreciation for Your Beatitude’s work and for the BOR involvement in supporting the people who need the care and protection of the church, in the cultural life, in education, in the dialogue among confessions and religions,’ Traian Basescu told Patriarch Daniel.
The Head of State appreciated the involvement of BOR in helping the disaster victims and in educating the youths and said that the church was ‘the creator and carrier of moral values in society.’
According to the President, the organization of new eparchies and parishes in the diaspora was an obvious priority in His Beatitude Daniel’s first year as Patriarch.
‘Knowing the importance you attach to the communication of Christian values in an open society, by expanding the Radio Trinitas network and by setting up the Trinitas Television, we can say that BOR has started the age of a modern communication and has met the expectations of its own believers. Considering the participation of Orthodoxy in the identity of the great European family, to which Romania belongs thanks to it spiritual patrimony too, I am convinced of the significance of the responsible and beneficent contribution BOR makes under the guidance of Your Beatitude to the development of the whole Romanian society,’ said the Head of State.
Minister of Culture Adrian Iorgulescu, Minister of Economy and Finance Varujan Vosganian as well as chairman of the Social Democratic Party Mircea Geoana also attended the ceremony that took place in the patriarchal cathedral. AGERPRES
