Brasov institutions embroiled in scandal over pregnant suspected HIV-infected teenager
August 29, 2008
The case of a 14-year-old girl, pregnant and suspected of being infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), sparked a conflict between the Brasov Gynecology Hospital and the Brasov Social Security and Child Protection Department, after the doctor on duty at the maternity clinic refused to see the teenager.
The refusal was grounded in the case not being an emergency and the patient not having a sending note from the family practitioner to be seen by a specialty doctor, Mediafax reports.
The adolescent, aged 14, a resident of the commune of Teliu, Brasov County, jumped from the fifth floor of a building on August 24, yet escaped but with a few scratches. She holds that she was illegally confined in an apartment and tried to escape by throwing herself out the window.
