20 families demolish own homes to receive new ones

Several families in Suceava County have demolished their own homes, in the hope of receiving new ones. That is the case of two families in Tibeni, Suceava County, who demolished their own homes after they found out that the Archbishopric and the Government are building houses for the flood victims. ‘I went there personally and I’ve told them that if they demolish them they will build them alone. They didn’t understand and they imagined this will be a charity’ Valentin Puscasu, the priest in Tibeni, stated for Realitatea TV.

The local authorities stated that the people that hope to get new houses if they demolish the old ones are generally the people that don’t bother to work. However the authorities fear that the situation could become a mass phenomenon, after 20 families that were not affected by the floods asked for aid.

Alexandru Baisanu, the Suceava County prefect, claims that he has told the mayors of the flood-stricken localities that he would not accept new requests to reevaluate the damages, since the damage evaluation commissions have already conducted those measurements. ‘We have come to the situation in which the owners of houses unaffected by floods ask for their demolition or for them to be evaluated by commissions that would possibly find new damages,’ the prefect stated.

On the other hand, the authorities have told the victims of the disaster in Radauti-Prut that if they refuse to move they will not receive the authorization to rebuild their houses in the locations that had been affected by floods. The Ministry of Environment has thus turned down the requests filed by 80 Botosani County families.
