Zimbrulu and Vulturulu newspaper copy sets world record as the world’s most expensive newspaper copy

The Worlds Record Academy included among its recorda the newspaper copy ”Zimbrulu and Vulturulu” (the Aurochs and the Eagle) as the most expensive newspaper in the world. The daily is showcased at the EFIRO 2008 World Philatelic Exhibition in Bucharest and it was registered to vie in a contest refereed by the world philatelic federation.

The exhibition brought together over 800 stamp collections owned by over 650 collectors from 86 countries. The exhibits are worth about 800 million euros and they are rare stamps including first issues of the first Romanian stamps the Aurochs Head, or the Penny Black the first post stamp ever issued or the registered letter found after the Hiroshima bomb explosion site that is still displaying radiation traces.

Worth 830,000 euros Zimbrulu si Vulturulu newspaper copy (the Aurochs and the Eagle) is the favourite in the race for the National Award of the EFIRO 2008 World Philatelic Exhibition along the famous ‘Auroch’s head’ stamps .

The 1858 copy of the Zimbrulu si Vulturulu (the Aurochs and the Eagle) newspaper copy was printed in Iasi, eastern Romania, was accidentally stamped with eight Auroch heads of the 2nd issue. The newspaper’s destination was Galati (south eastern Romania) where it was bought by a stamp collecting bookshop owner. Afterwards, the owners’ traces vanished until 1969. Since 2006 the newspaper is the property of Joseph Hackmey in Israel. Today, the Romanian stamps are among the highest acclaimed in the world, with Romania ranking seventh in the classification of the most beautiful stamps in the world. Romania annually sells stamps worth hundreds of thousands of euros.

EFIRO is a traditional event in Romania and its first edition happened in 1932. EFIRO 2008 is a special edition as it is the first world philatelic exhibition in Romania. The Romanian Post is staging the event to mark the 150th anniversary since the famous Aurochs head stamps were issued. ROMPRES
