PRM challenges single vote with CCR

March 6, 2008

Vice-President of Greater Romania Party (PRM) Lucian Bolcas said on Thursday his party challenged the Law on the single vote with Romania’s Constitutional Court (CCR).

He told a press conference that the challenge was signed by 26 senators from PRM, the Conservative Party (PC), and also independents, with the signatures coming only from the Senate, 25 signatures are necessary for the challenge to be accepted.

‘PRM has been the only parliamentary party which has said it is against the single vote. We have taken this responsibility to voice the will of the over 12 million voters who did not turn out at the referendum on the single vote. There was not only lack of interest, that was the rejection of an action which is not in the parameters necessary for the current stage of development of Romania. (…) One of the big gains of democracy is the multi-party system, and the single vote leads to the destruction of the political parties, to their dissolution, ‘ said Bolcas, adding that this was the main argument of the challenging.

He said the challenge is a request to globally examine the law and its effects, invoking, at the same time, the non-constitutional character of some provisions of the bill. ROMPRES
