Tariceanu: Romania not going to recognize Kosovo independence
February 16, 2008
Romania will not recognize independence of Kosovo province, but will not block a stance at the European level on this question either, stated on Thursday evening, on the TV public channel, Premier Calin Popescu-Tariceanu, in the context created by the imminent declaration of independence, unilaterally, by Kosovo inhabitants.
According to the Premier, in order to settle the Kosovo issue an understanding should intervene between Serbians and Kosovars, which will guarantee and respect principles of the minorities’ individual rights.
‘The situation in Kosovo must be settled according to the international law’, said Tariceanu.
As for Romania’s participation with military forces in the province, the Government’s head stressed that it is ‘in Romania’s interest to act as a stability and security factor in the region’.
Tariceanu pointed out that participation with forces in Kosovo also represents Romania assuming its obligations as an European Union member state. ROMPRES
