Tariceanu: President implied that MAE and MAp failed to seriously treat Chad issue

February 16, 2008

Premier Calin Popescu-Tariceanu stated on Thursday, on TVR channel, that he acted in accordance with valid legislation as regards the Memorandum addressed to the Upper Defence Council (CSAT) in the question of sending troops in Chad, saying that President Traian Basescu suggested that the ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defence failed to treat seriously this issue.

‘What we have done up to now is in line with the Romanian legislation, we proceeded in a similar way when sending troops in Afghanistan, Iraq or on some other operation theaters. This Memorandum, which was forwarded by MAE and MAp to the Premier, I assented to the document and submitted it to CSAT for approval. I do not think this is already an engagement, as I read some speculations in the press, or as the President tried to imply that MAE and MAp lacked seriousness when treating this issue. We dealt with it according to the Romanian legislation and to our obligations as an European Union member state’, underlined the Prime Minister.

The Government’s head also said that he does not know why the Memorandum on Chad was not introduced on CSAT Friday meeting’s agenda.

‘I cannot answer this question. You should ask the Presidency’, he said.

Tariceanu explained that participation with military forces in Chad, linked to the refugees’ situation in Sudan, in Darfur zone, is a question decided at the EU level and Romania, which assumes its obligations, took into consideration such a move. ROMPRES
