Current account deficit, 16.872 billion euros in 2007

The current account of the balance of payments reached a deficit of 16.872 billion euros in 2007, mainly due to the deficit of the trade balance, which stood at 17.586 billion euros, up 49.6 percent from 2006, according to an announcement on Thursday by the Central Bank (BNR).

The 2007 current account deficit was 41.9 percent covered by direct foreign investments, which stood at 7.069 billion euros, of which participations in the capital and in the reinvested profit represented 45.9 percent, and with the intergroup credits having accounted for 54.1 percent.

The foreign debt on both a medium and long term on Dec. 31, 2007 stood at 36.728 billion euros, that is an increase by 28.3 percent on 31 Dec. 2006.

The public and the publicly guaranteed foreign debt recorded a balance of 10.370 billion euros on Dec. 31, 2007, and accounted for 28.2 percent of the foreign debt on a medium and long term (vs. 38.8 percent on Dec. 31, 2006). The foreign debt which is not publicly guaranteed stood at 23.139 billion euros on Dec. 31, 2007, that is a rise by 39.8 percent compared with the figure on Dec. 31, 2006. ROMPRES
