Yellow code snowfall and blizzard warning

January 1, 2008

The National Meteorological Agency (ANM) released on Tuesday a yellow code warning for the interval January 1, 10.00 p.m. – January 3, 10.00 p.m. (local time).

Snowfalls are expected in this interval in most regions of Romania and particular spots in Oltenia, Muntenia, Dobrogea and the southern half of Moldavia (historical provinces) will have abundant snow and blizzard, with the wind speeding to 70 – 80 km per hour. The wind will also temporarily intensify in Transylvania (center Romania) and in the mountains.

According to ANM, in the 3 – 4 days after the aforementioned period the weather will be frosty in the country east, center and south, especially in the morning and at night.

The yellow code refers to meteorological phenomena (rain, lightning, wind gusts, extreme temperatures) that are within the usual parameters for the respective area, but that can temporarily become dangerous for particular activities.

In a brief forecast for winter 2007 – 2008, ANM head Ion Sandu said that the weather will be normal for this season all through the country, but that this will no longer be an atypical cold season like that the year before and that 2008 is a normal year as far as the precipitation and weather regime is concerned.
