Tariceanu: We’ll not recognize an independent Kosovo
December 14, 2007
Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu reiterated on Friday morning, before the summit of the European Council he was to participate in, that Romania will not recognize the independence of Kosovo province.
The Romanian prime minister highlighted that ‘there is a strong interest in supporting a common position related to this matter’ on the European level, with Romania supporting this common effort too.
‘But there is a problem on which Romania’s stand is quite clear: we will not recognize the independence of Kosovo province, as we have serious doubts related to how such status of independence should be granted and also related to the possible consequences on the entire Western Balkan region,’ Tariceanu said.
The European Union heads of state and foreign affairs ministers are to discuss the Kosovo file during a working lunch on Friday on the sidelines of the winter session of the European Council in Brussels.
The winter session of the European Council is to mark the end of the EU Portuguese Presidency. ROMPRES
