Romanian Foreign Ministry regrets Russia’s decision to suspend implementation of CFE Treaty
December 13, 2007
The Romanian Foreign Ministry (MAE) is voicing regret over the decision of the Russian Federation to act on its intention to suspend as from December 12, 2007, the implementation of the Treaty on Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE), reads a release issued by the MAE.
The decision is said to be a unilateral measure affecting the integrity of the CFE regime and compromising the commitment to fulfill the obligations assumed under the treaty, says the release.
MAE is also pointing out that it is regrettable that Russia has taken this decision despite the efforts of the NATO member states and of other parties to the treaty in view of finding out a solution to break the deadlock.
Romania believes the CFE Treaty to be a cornerstone of European security with an essential contribution to strengthening transparency, predictability and trust in Europe.
Romania is reiterating its pledge to the CFE Treaty and its wish to contribute to the coming into force of the Adapted CFE Treaty after the Russian Federation has fulfilled its commitments pledged in Istanbul in 1999, reads the MAE release. ROMPRES
