It does not matter which party the MEPs belong to, Basescu says
November 30, 2007
Present on Friday at the ceremony for handing certificates to the Romanian MEPs, President Traian Basescu said that, for him, there are no MEPs of the Democratic Party (PD), the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the National Liberal Party (PNL), the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) or independent ones, but only ‘Romanian parliamentarians in the European Parliament.’
‘When you believe it’s high time to correlate your political stance with the president of Romania, do it. As I already did, when part of you were sent as observers from Romania to the European Parliament, I invite you to enter a partnership with the presidential institution in the projects of European policy and in Romania’s projects of foreign policy,’ Basescu told the future Romanian MEPs.
He thanked the members of the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) and the political parties for the fair-play of the electoral campaign.
According to him, all the 22 million Romanians have contributed to this moment, even though some six million of them did not vote.
Basescu said that the basic mission of the 35 Romanian MEPs in the Legislative in Brussels will be to harmonize the general interest of Europe with the national interest.
Underlining that the MEP will go to powerful political families, Basescu said that they will have to find a coordinating formula, for them to represent along with the interests of the political groups they belong to the position and needs of Romania in the decisions to be made.
Basescu believes the mandate of the MEPs will be ‘very significant’, because on Jan. 1, 2009, the European Parliament will enter a new stage, becoming co-participant in decision-making.
Basescu said November is a month full of significance for Romanian parliamentarianism, with the first parliamentary elections in Muntenia held in 1831, and in Moldova in 1832. ROMPRES
