President Basescu: Parliamentary majority might build to pass single vote act

November 29, 2007

President Traian Basescu on Thursday said that a majority might build in Parliament to adopt the bill on the majority-based single vote system, if PLD, PD and PSD ‘are honest’ with the electorate that pronounced itself in the referendum for this type of ballot.

‘A majority could be formed so that the will of the four million Romanians who voted in the referendum for the single vote to turn into reality,’ said the chief of the state, specifying that he has in mind the fact that both PD and PLD declared during Thursday’s consultations that they back the project and that PSD has filed a relevant normative act far back in 2005 and recently re-asserted its further support for the bill.

According to the President, a normative act introducing the majority-based single vote should be adopted, because otherwise the Romanians who had their say in the referendum will have the feeling that their vote does not count. ROMPRES
