SRI should inform prosecutor’s office if avails of information on illegal phone-tapping

August 24, 2007

The Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) should inform the Prosecutor’s Office in case it avails of information that private companies tap the phones of some dignitaries and blackmail them after that.

‘If SRI avails of such data, it has the legal duty to notify the Prosecutor’s Office and the latter must start investigations immediately. It is no use to speak publicly, cry or lament about that,’ PM Tariceanu said in Targu Mures (north-west of Bucharest) on Thursday, specifying he has no such information.

Several private companies carry out illegal activities, followed by blackmailing public personalities, SRI Col. Eugen Iorga said on Wednesday during the Senate Law Commission’s debates on the laws on national safety. Subsequently, he proposed that SRI be conferred by law the competence to ‘prevent’ such acts.
