Torrential rain washes sand away from beaches and makes sea cliffs collapse
August 8, 2007
Nine localities on the southern seaside were seriously affected by the torrential rain fallen on Tuesday night, with 80 litres per square metre reported in less than one hour.
The Romanian Waters Dobrogea Littoral informed Rompres that the torrents damaged the sea cliffs in Eforie Nord, Eforie Sud, Costinesti, Jupiter, Neptun, Cap Aurora and Venus Olimp.
‘The water hollowed out 2-4 metre wide ditches, 60 cm in depth, in these resorts, while the sand was washed away from beaches in many areas,’ said the spokesman of the Romanian Waters.
The Inspectorate for Emergency Situations Constanta told Rompres that some 200 firefighters and soldiers helped tourists leave the houses and hotels where waters flooded and intervened with equipment to limit the damage.
The torrential rain flooded during the night in Constanta city the main avenues as well as the house basements, the water level exceeding 60 cm in some areas. ROMPRES
