Romania fares much better than her reputation in Europe shows, Leonard Orban says

December 14, 2006

Leonard Orban, the first European Commissioner from Romania, is to take over on January 1, 2007 his job as the European Commissioner for Multilingualism. On this occasion, Orban gave an interview to the Austrian online publication OoeNachrichten, in which he explains why he wants the Europeans to learn foreign languages and what should Europe expect from Romania.

Also, referring to a survey among the employees in Brussels which showed that more than a half of them think Romania is an old fashioned and chaotic country, Leonard Orban replied: “This not fair. Although, it is true that in certain rural areas, the modern times have not reached yet, and that Romania needs better organisational management. But the country eyes a good dynamic now. And the young generation is firmly oriented towards the future. I know that Romania’s image in many countries is not a very good one. But this is just not reflecting the reality. Romania must promote its successes better.”

Related to the new field of activity he is to work in, Orban told the Austrian publication that the “Linguistic diversity serves as a basis connecting the culture, education and competitiveness. This field is concerned with the linguistic rights of the minorities and also with the EU official languages. I will have in charge 3,400 employees, that is more than 15 percent of the Commission’s personnel. It is certainly not going to be a ‘light’ field of activity,” Orban said. ROMPRES
