Bulgaria, Romania Seek Damages from Serbia for Danube Slick
December 14, 2006
Bulgaria and Romania made a resolute move for receiving compensations from Serbia for the huge oil slick that polluted the Danube river at the end of September.
The demand for compensation was voiced at a meeting of high-ranking officials from the Environment Ministries of the three countries in Vienna. The meeting was initiated by Bulgaria’s minister Dzhevdet Chakarov.
Deputy Minister Lyubka Kachakova represented the Bulgarian side. She said the pollution from the Serbian oil refinery at Prahovo port cost Bulgaria BGN 1,500,000 already.
Romania set the cost for cleaning the polluted area on its territory at EUR 300,000.
