From 2007 on, December 1, Romania’s National Day, and May 9, Europe Day, will stay together in the calendar of official Romanian holidays, President Traian Basescu told a solemn session of Parliament on Thursday.
Basescu pointed out that December 1, 2006 is the last national day of Romania ahead of the country’s accession to the European Union and paid homage to the forerunners having scarified their lives for today’s Romania.
“The Greater Union has proved Romania’s European vocation. December 1 is the holiday of all Romanians, the moral base for the pride of being Romanians and January 1, 2007 will bring about the pride of being finally reintegrated with Europe,’ said Basescu.
Basescu voiced hope that Romanians from Basarabia and Bucovina will preserve their language, culture and tradition bequeathed by their forefathers because these may be a basis for Romanians’ reunification in Europe.
He paid homage to Romanian soldiers of the past and the present days to whom he said the Romanian nation owes recognition.
“It is our duty to cultivate the ties between each Romanian and the nation in which he or she was born. EU membership is a unique opportunity for the development of Romania, but helping this transformation depends on us all,” said Basescu.
The President wished all Romanian health, prosperity, wisdom and generosity towards the people in distress. ROMPRES
