Moscovici report on Romania’s EU accession clears European Parliament plenum

November 30, 2006

Rompres correspondent Ileana Nidelea reports: Romania this Thursday successfully passed the last test before her joining the European Union, as the European Parliament plenum adopted the Moscovici report by a vote of 542-41 and 27 abstentions.

Of the set of amendments filed over the last week since the vote cast in the EP Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), the plenum of the community lawmaking body passed only the one calling on EU member states to allow the Romanians and Bulgarians’ access to their labor market after the two countries join the community forum.

The amendments referring to international adoptions lodged by ALDE eurodeputies Jean-Marie Cavada and Claire Gibault were rejected, although a compromise formula had been reached one week ago, during the vote cast within AFET. The amendment that raised the issue of the representation on the political scene and the participation in elections – next year’s elections for European Parliament included – of “parties that do not observe the rule of law state, legislation and the principle of equal rights,” also fell short in the EP plenum.
